Hormonal Acne and Diet

Although the myth about eating chocolates can cause acne has already been debunked, other foods can still trigger acne breakouts.

Recent studies show that foods high in glycemic index (simple carbohydrates that are high in sugar content) can worsen acne condition.

Insulin is a hormone responsible for the breakdown down of sugar. The presence of too much sugar in the blood increases the level of insulin needed in the blood, a condition called hyperinsulinemia. Hyperinsulinemia can encourage overproduction of oil. Too much oil can lead to the formation of acne.

It is suggested that eating the right kind of diet can control acne that is caused by hormones.

So if you believe your acne is mainly due to your hormones, instead of mainly relying on topical medications, try incorporating a low glycemic index diet as part your treatment plan. This will not only be for the benefit of your skin, but also for your overall health.
